Two old profiles of theologians who have been my teachers (both near and from afar), both by Mark Oppenheimer:

Stanley Hauerwas (published Sep 2001);
Miroslav Volf (published Jan 2003).

It’s amazing to read these pieces about then already famous theologians written twenty-two and twenty-four years ago, respectively. This year Hauerwas turns 85 and Volf 69. They’re still with us, and just as famous, but the political, ecclesial and academic scenes are profoundly different. These profiles function as time capsules of a sort, even though they’re not even a generation old.
