Freddie’s take on Hollywood and popular art is right, but I do wish he would substitute “juvenile” or “YA” for “children.” Art for children can be mature, thoughtful, and deep, and therefore not childish for adults to enjoy (so long as it’s not the totality of their diet). The problem Freddie is identifying is art that is essentially adolescent by nature and intent; it’s the ethos of “young adult” novels that always affirm and never challenge their readers' beliefs, desires, or views of the world and themselves. If film and literature were deluged with children’s art on a par with Kenneth Grahame, Beatrix Potter, and the like, we would find ourselves in a much happier situation than we do at present.
